Schwarzschmied Talk with Dietmar Gamper

16. October 2023

Monday, 16 October at 8.30 pm

Dietmar Gamper is considered one of the most popular actors, directors and cabaret artists in South Tyrol, not only because he always wears a hat. He lives in Lana and is also active as an author and illustrator in addition to his main job. He celebrated one of his greatest successes in 2019 with the play "100 Years of South Tyrol", a 3-hour epic commissioned by the group Dekadenz, which deals with the annexation of South Tyrol in 1919 up to the present day. Dietmar Gamper wrote the play, directed it and took on various small supporting roles himself.

It began like in the theatre. Pianist Michael Lösch sat at his instrument and announced the star of the evening with his fingers on the keys. Presenter Hannes Egger briefly introduced the life of Dietmar Gamper and only then did he step out from behind the curtain. He bowed skilfully and the audience spontaneously picked up the thread and applauded the actor, director, cabaret artist and visual artist.

To start the talk, Dietmar Gamper told about his almost historic minibus or camper, which has the tank in the tailcoat and the tank contents must be filled accordingly so that it does not stop when driving uphill. Gamper, who has been driving the van for many years and has his workplace in Gfrill above Lana, which means he drives a mountain road more or less every day, also knows how to help himself in a special emergency situation: It is enough to drive backwards, then the engine gets petrol again.

Surprisingly, the conversation continued. Gamper talked about the fact that he copies all the texts he has to work with - as an actor, but also as a director - by hand, which, he says, is how he really gets to know the texts. He writes all his own texts by hand anyway. While chatting, he tells us that he lost half of the manuscript for "100 Years of South Tyrol", a 3-hour epic commissioned by the group Dekadenz. Because there is no backup on paper, he had to go back and rewrite the text, which has certainly improved in quality, according to Gamper's self-assessment.

Towards the end of the interview, Hannes Egger wanted to know from Dietmar Gamper whether he preferred one of his many activities to another. In a brief outline, Gamper reported on what he finds exciting about acting, what fascinates him about directing, that he extremely enjoys playwriting because it has to do with people and that he sometimes also likes to work on lengthy visual projects.

The talk was again ended by a bow from Dietmar Gamper and afterwards Michael Lösch let the evening come to an end at the piano in the Schwarzschmied Bar.
